Wilarandy Brahman Stud was founded in 1982 by Steve & David Turner, and started with a small number of females purchased from Cherokee and Lugenor Brahman studs. Initially, the emphasis was on breeding a grey herd, utilising bulls such as Allawah Contara (by Cherokee Conquistador) and Hillview Grey Gentleman (by Tropical Cattle Jackaroo). The importation of CMT Tuxpeno and EOD 103/2 (Everado) led to the first use of imported bloodlines. Immediate success was achieved with the first draught of stud bulls by these sires averaging $6,500 each. The purchase of a Beacon Pastures red cow in 1985 led to the founding of the Wilarandy red herd. This cow had an MSH Pepper 18/7 daughter who is now the matriarch of our red herd. At this stage, with the co-founders both at University, the cattle took second place. Over the next few years finishing University, getting jobs and establishing careers continued to push the cattle further into the background. This was around 1991, and because of this situation a decision was taken to sell up. Then two other events occurred that changed the course of action. The success of Wilarandy Trail Blazer selling for $10,500 to Bendamore Brahman Stud, and the growing love for cattle by his new wife Sharon, led to Steve & Sharon Turner going their own way and forming Wilarandy S Brahman Stud in 1995.
Over the next few years we stuck to what we knew, Hillview & Cherokee
bloodlines. The main
bull used was Cherokee LC Mex Man. We entered the
show ring for the first time in the year 2000,
with two young Mex Man
sons. At Beef 2000, these bulls were both second youngest in their
respective classes and second heaviest. They both achieved very
creditable 4th places in large
classes. (17 bulls in one class
and 21 in the other class). We took the bulls through the a few
Central
Highlands shows where they always placed well.
At the end of this period we sold the older bull Wilarandy S Conquistador
and the other bull
Wilarandy S Contara (after winning his class at
Emerald) unfortunately died. |

In 2001, we very lightly showed Wilarandy S Red Dove 1005 (a red female by Cherokee LC Mex Man). However, we decided to stop showing and change the direction we were going with our breeding program. We culled heavily and sold off the majority of the herd. In line with our new direction we purchased the Top Price female, BE OS Calista Manso 122, at the February 2003 All Breeds sale. We have used her lightly as a donor female and with the results we have seen we are now preparing to flush her further. Again in October 2003 we purchased the Top Priced Red Female at the Great Western Sale – Elrose Red Robin – a magnificent daughter of Lancefield D Robinson. We also paid a premium price for the first release of HK Visa Brasil. The Visa Brasil semen was used over “Robin” and “Red Dove 1005” and these calves are being prepared for showing at Beef 2006. We would welcome inspections anytime, they really are worth seeing.
Now we
have taken the step and started using the American bloodlines, we have a
very different vision for the future
of the stud. Like everyone, we hope
we are taking the right steps and that our visions and goals are
achieved. Please
let us take this opportunity to wish everyone good luck,
happy touring through the Web Site and if you’re ever down
our way please
drop in for a visit. |
